Gulag’s Creature Shop lets people see what lies behind scenic design: from mould making, constructed mechanical elements, puppets and handmade toys through, to costumes, masks and mascots.

The Concept

We make the whole story up: develop a character, draw a puppet and costume, design a scene or prop, make technical drawings and technological sketches. We choose materials and techniques, write a work plan and ask the right questions: what is the purpose of this element? How does it function?

The Process

Sometimes the process of working is described as creative chaos. This might be true and yet at other times we talk of combining it with an automatic technical process. We work with different materials and techniques: woodcarving, shaping foam, making plaster or silicone moulds.
